The battery and charger come with the mower, and replacement batteries for the VonHaus 40-volt will be available in the summer of 2018.

Performance

Because it’s so slim and lightweight at 38 pounds, the VonHaus 40-volt snakes around flower beds and gardens with a litheness that’s not as easy to do with larger-scaled mowers. If you’ve got a garden, this is an agile mower that will compliment your yard nicely without stinking up the air with smelly fumes. If you’ve got teenagers whom you want to mow the yard, this mower is light enough that they should be able to use it. If you’ve got arthritis or other movement-related issues, this might be a compact and lightweight enough mower that will work for you, even though it’s not self-propelled.

The brushless motor offers a longer life for the mower and reliability you can depend on. It feels good using a mower that’s easy on the environment and doesn’t require an awkward cord that can sometimes get in the way of your progress.

Designed for small yards, the VonHaus 40-volt will run for approximately 30 minutes with no bagging load. The tires have decent tread that offer good grip. It’s best not to use an electric on wet grass.

Ease of Use

The VonHaus 40-volt doesn’t require you to gas up or plug in a cord. All you need to do is charge the accompanying lithium-ion battery to get going. The 4Ah battery charges in 150 minutes, and you can see how things are progressing with the LED charge-indicator light.

The mulching function is built into the mower, and if you choose to bag, the container clips on and off with ease. Once you’ve selected your cutting height, which ranges from 1 to 3 inches, a single lever above the deck is all it takes to get the 16-inch deck right where you need it.

When you’re done with that perfect cut, the mower’s folding handle will let you store the machine in a compact, out-of-the-way location.

Cut Quality & Options

This is a high-tech mower that offers plenty of intuitive functions, making it highly accessible to many. Plus it offers a precise cut. The built-in mulching feature means you can fertilize your yard with ultra-fine clippings every time out. The 16-inch cutting deck offers a respectable width-of-cut on every pass, making this an ideal mower for small- to medium-sized yards. The blade is functionable while pushing or pulling, and you can bag clippings if you want using the 50-litre grass collection box. These 2-in-1 options make this a versatile electric for the environmentally conscious.

Mowers can choose from six cutting heights ranging from on to 3 inches. The adjusting of a single lever right above the deck is all it takes to get the desired height you need. This is a great option for “mowing on the fly,” so to speak, those times when lighter grass or perhaps bigger patches or other terrain issues may make a cutting height adjustment a desirable option. With this single lever, you can adjust the grass height according to conditions, and you don’t need to stop to do it.

Maintenance

The VonHaus 40-volt thankfully requires less maintenance than a gas-powered machine, but obviously you still need to maintain it. Keep the underside of the deck free of clumped grass and dirt and debris. Make sure all nuts and bolts are tight and secure, as mower vibration and rough terrain may loosen them after extended use. Check the blade as much as you can to make sure it’s sharp; replace it when needed. Maintain proper battery care and dispose of the battery properly when it no longer functions. If you typically bag when mowing, make sure the grass container is free of clippings and debris after each use, and check periodically for holes. Take care to not ram the tires into objects to ensure longer life for them. Clean the exterior and wheels of debris. Store the mower in a temperature-friendly location that is also well ventilated, if possible. Check out the owner’s manual for all maintenance tips.

Safety Features

Like other solid battery-powered mowers on the market, the VonHaus 40-volt requires a simple two-stage starting process in which operators simply press a button on the side of the handle and pull back and hold the orange lever near the soft-grip handle, which engages the mower.

Special Features

What’s great about VonHaus’s six garden power tools is that they can all be powered by the company’s same 40-volt battery. So when you’re done mowing, slip the battery into a VonHaus hedge trimmer, edger, or chainsaw to further landscape your yard. As for this mower, it boasts:

  • A rapid-charge battery and charger
  • 2-in-1 mowing technology with a built-in mulcher
  • A highly maneuverable design
  • A brushless motor for longer life
  • Six grass-cutting heights for the best look

Cost Effectiveness

This is a typically priced electric in its class that offers some great cost-savings functions, not the least of which is the fact that you won’t have to pay for gas or oil or worry about parts such as air filters and spark plugs. Thanks to brushless technology, the motor is designed to last for a long time. Though this may not be the most efficient mower for medium or large-sized yards, given its 28-minute run time, the VonHaus 40-volt will save you money thanks to a lithium-ion battery that charges in two hours. What’s a bit confusing is that the battery is advertised as having “rapid charge” technology, but a two-hour charging time does not seem fast to me. Luckily, replacement batteries for the mower will be available in the summer of 2018, which means you’ll be able to charge one while mowing with the other. That process will make this a more versatile, accessible mower for varied yards. Bagging with this mower means no raking and keeps your yard looking pristine, while the built-in mulching function keeps your grass looking lush and well fertilized all season long.
